Being restricted to our local area for walking has led many of us to explore new paths, getting to know our home patch much better than before.

In summer my fellow Rambler Jan suggested a route that neither of us had tried before, just across the river Tywi from Llandeilo.  It’s mostly on quiet country roads but it includes a little-used track through deciduous woodland and forestry, with a rushing stream.   I’ve walked it again in the autumn and winter, enjoying the differences with the changing seasons. 

From Llandeilo station we cross the King’s Bridge that swings above the fast-flowing river, and carry on to the Bethlehem road.  Turning left we walk about 1.5 miles, with lovely views over the river - often flooded as shown here in January 2021.  We pass a bridge over a stream by Maesquarre,and then the entrance to Crymlyn Manor.

Then we drop down to a bridge over the Afan Araeth.  Turning right here, we walk up to Capel Bryn Evan, standing in a peaceful setting beside the stream.  The track was well used in the past, by people from the various farms and cottages around, but the chapel is no longer open.

Ignoring the Road Closed sign we get our sticks out to climb up this muddy, stony track, ducking under fallen branches and trees.  We take extra care where land has fallen away, leaving a narrow footway.  There’s a waterfall down to our left, barely visible through the woodland.

As we gain height we reach the Maesydderwen forestry plantation where clearance is under way, with 3 or 4 big vehicles dotted around, and huge piles of trees.  A gentleman we met here told us he used to farm this land until it was sold to the forestry, so many years ago it made him feel old.  We continue along the track until we reach the minor road. 

Turning right here, there’s a long couple of miles along the quiet lane until we get down to Ty Gwyn farm, turn left and then right to cross the field leading back to the footbridge over the Tywi.  As walks go, it’s been varied and interesting enough to work up an appetite, feel a bit fitter and definitely deserve coffee and cake at home afterwards!
